How long did it take to apply the shells?
It has taken over 400 hours to complete Shell Truck, plus ongoing repair and addition of shells.
Were the shells found and/or bought?
Most were found on beaches around the world and some bought. There are over 700 sand dollars on the truck which were found on Ocean Beach in San Francisco.
With flexible, waterproof silicone caulking. Silicone is a very strong adhesive so the shells do not come off, even on the freeway.
How is Shell Truck washed?
How many, and what type of shells are on the car? How much do the shells weigh?
There are thousands of shells weighing over 400 lbs. total (yes, this does slow the truck down and affects gas mileage), including: California Sandollars (sides), Sea Urchin Spines (sides, roof and back), Purple Barnacle Cluster (hood), Truncata Spider (roof), Lambis Lambis (hood), Black Murex (back), Giant Cockle (roof), Cerithium Sulcata (roof), Olive Shells (hood), White Chullas (hood), Silver Lips (hood), Babylonia Japonica (back), Strombus Auresdiane (hood), Strawberry Tops (roof), Pink Rose Cups (roof), Sundials (roof) and more! See how many shells you can identify…
Do people vandalize and/or take shells off Shell Truck?
Thankfully, people have been very respectful of this work. Shell Truck has been parked and viewed in numerous cities throughout the Western United States with no problems, a testament to the character of residents and visitors in these regions. Soon we will be taking Shell Truck across the country, from San Francisco to New York and back during 2006 and 2007.
